Josh and I had a conversation on the way home from work a few days ago and he asked me how I would feel if my mom were to pass away…Of course I cried, but my response was that I’d be completely devastated. He wondered why we (people) don’t see death as being a positive thing…There would be no more suffering, no pain, no worries, no regrets…Our afterlife, or the one that we’ve been taught to believe in, is a peaceful place where we can all wander aimlessly underneath welcoming trees, candy blue skies and fluffy clouds made out of vanilla ice cream…that doesn’t melt. Our souls will be free to play and go where ever we like without a care in the world. That place we go after we die is magical, so why DO we get sad or angry when someone goes there? These weren’t his exact words, but I understood what he meant…
Death and I have a love hate relationship. We met when I was 7 years old at my grandpa’s house in Austin, Texas. One morning he showed up on the porch during a family gathering and despite the threats from my angry aunts and uncles, he refused to leave. We’ve been running into each other ever since. At first I didn’t understand his agenda so I naturally assumed that he was an asshole. The way he would just pop in and out of my life unannounced, taking the ones I loved. I remember when my mom used to drag us to Sunday school, our teacher would lecture about heaven and hell, but she never explained why God would want us to feel the pain that comes after someone dies…In fact, aside from telling me “it’s a part of the plan”, nobody could really answer that question, but eventually I went rogue and found my own answers.
